OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, has posted a job opening with a staggering salary of $555,000 per year, accompanied by an exceptionally challenging job description that might leave even Superman gasping for breath.

The position, titled “head of preparedness,” entails a monumental responsibility: safeguarding against threats posed by increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) systems that could jeopardize human mental health, cybersecurity, and even biological security. On top of that, the candidate will need to address the unsettling prospect of AIs potentially self-training, a concern raised by some experts who warn that these developments could lead to AIs turning hostile.

“This role is going to be intense, and you’ll be thrust into complex situations right from the start,” remarked Sam Altman, CEO of the San Francisco-based company, as he kicked off the search for someone to fill this “critical role” aimed at “helping the world.”

The ideal applicant will be tasked with assessing and managing emerging threats, as well as monitoring and preparing for groundbreaking capabilities that might pose severe risks. Some predecessors in this position have held it for only brief periods.

This job listing emerges during a time when voices within the AI sector caution about the potential dangers associated with technology progressing at such a rapid pace. Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, recently stated on BBC Radio 4’s Today program, “If you’re not somewhat concerned at this moment, then you’re likely not paying attention.”

Demis Hassabis, co-founder of Google DeepMind and a Nobel laureate, also raised alarms this month regarding the potential risks of AI behaviors that could be detrimental to humanity.

With minimal regulation around AI at both national and international levels — exacerbated by pushback from the Trump administration — industry experts like Yoshua Bengio, one of the field’s “godfathers,” commented recently that “a sandwich has more regulation than AI.” Consequently, many AI companies find themselves self-regulating.

As Altman announced the job opening on platform X (formerly Twitter), he emphasized, “We have established a strong foundation for measuring growing capabilities, but we are stepping into an era where a more nuanced understanding of potential abuses is critical. We need to address these risks both in our products and globally, allowing everyone to reap the significant benefits of AI. These challenges are complex, with little to guide us.”

What the role does offer is an undisclosed amount of equity in OpenAI, a company currently valued at $500 billion.

In a related note, last month, rival firm Anthropic reported the first documented instances of AI-driven cyberattacks, where AI operated mostly autonomously under the alleged supervision of Chinese state actors to breach and extract private data. Meanwhile, OpenAI announced that its latest model demonstrated nearly triple the hacking capability compared to three months prior, with expectations that future AI models will continue this upward trend.

OpenAI is also facing legal challenges, including a lawsuit from the family of Adam Raine, a 16-year-old from California who ended his life after purportedly being encouraged by ChatGPT. The company contends that Raine misused the technology. Additionally, another case filed this month claims that ChatGPT fueled the paranoid delusions of a 56-year-old man in Connecticut, leading him to murder his 83-year-old mother before taking his own life.

An OpenAI representative acknowledged that they are reviewing the filings associated with the Soelberg case, describing it as “incredibly heartbreaking.” The company is actively enhancing ChatGPT’s training to better recognize and respond to signs of emotional turmoil, de-escalate conversations, and direct individuals toward appropriate real-world support.

The maker of ChatGPT has advertised a $555,000-a-year vacancy with a daunting job description that would cause Superman to take a sharp intake of breath.

In what may be close to the impossible job, the “head of preparedness” at OpenAI will be directly responsible for defending against risks from ever more powerful AIs to human mental health, cybersecurity and biological weapons.

That is before the successful candidate has to start worrying about the possibility that AIs may soon begin training themselves amid fears from some experts they could “turn against us”.

“This will be a stressful job, and you’ll jump into the deep end pretty much immediately,” said Sam Altman, the chief executive of the San Francisco-based organisation, as he launched the hunt to fill “a critical role” to “help the world”.

The successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating and mitigating emerging threats and “tracking and preparing for frontier capabilities that create new risks of severe harm”. Some previous executives in the post have lasted only for short periods.

The opening comes against a backbeat of warnings from inside the AI industry about the risks of the increasingly capable technology. On Monday, Mustafa Suleyman, the chief executive of Microsoft AI, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I honestly think that if you’re not a little bit afraid at this moment, then you’re not paying attention.”

Demis Hassabis, the Nobel prize-winning co-founder of Google DeepMind, this month warned of risks that included AIs going “off the rails in some way that harms humanity”.

Amid resistance from Donald Trump’s White House, there is little regulation of AI at national or international level. This acquisition represents another strategic move by Masayoshi Son, SoftBank's founder and CEO, who is eagerly embracing a future dominated by artificial intelligence.

Son is making a substantial investment in the belief that AI will significantly innovate both business practices and societal functions, alongside SoftBank’s growth trajectory. A key component of this vision is a major stake in OpenAI, along with a partnership with the database giant Oracle on an extensive AI infrastructure initiative known as Stargate, aimed at supplying the computational resources required by the creators of ChatGPT.

DigitalBridge boasts management over assets exceeding $100 billion, which encompasses data centers, cellular towers, and fiber-optic networks. Son highlighted that this acquisition would fortify the groundwork necessary for advanced AI data centers and is integral to his vision of achieving what he terms "artificial super intelligence."

"As AI reshapes industries globally, there’s an increasing demand for computing power, connectivity, energy, and scalable infrastructure," Son remarked. Marc Ganzi, CEO of DigitalBridge, emphasized the magnitude of opportunities within AI infrastructure development, stating, "The expansion of AI infrastructure stands as one of the most remarkable investment prospects of our era."

Ganzi is an experienced player in the telecom sector, having founded Global Tower Partners, a telecom infrastructure company that was sold for $4.8 billion in 2013. SoftBank's offer to acquire DigitalBridge is set at $16 per share in cash, which represents a 15% premium over its closing price last Friday. The transaction approximates DigitalBridge's enterprise value at around $4 billion, including liabilities.

Established in 1991 as Colony Capital by Tom Barrack, a prominent financial supporter of former US President Donald Trump, DigitalBridge transitioned away from traditional real estate ventures in 2021. Barrack, who now holds the position of US ambassador to Turkey, managed the acquisition of DigitalBridge for $325 million in 2019 and stepped down as executive chair in favor of this new direction.

The deal is anticipated to finalize in the latter part of 2026, pending regulatory approvals. Ganzi will continue operating DigitalBridge as an independently managed entity.

In 2025, SoftBank's shares have nearly doubled thanks to Son's aggressive pursuit of AI-related investments. However, over the past two months, the stock has experienced a decline of about one-third due to fears of an AI market bubble and uncertainties regarding SoftBank's financing capability for its significant OpenAI investments. Earlier in November, SoftBank divested its complete stake in AI chipmaker Nvidia for $5.8 billion to facilitate its acquisition endeavors.

SoftBank's CFO, Yoshimitsu Goto, indicated last month that the company would need to offload parts of its existing portfolio to support over $30 billion in expected investments in OpenAI. Despite this, Son has continued his acquisition strategy unabated. Recently, SoftBank agreed to purchase ABB’s robotics division for $5.4 billion and has explored further investments in the UK autonomous driving startup Wayve, according to reports from the Financial Times. Additionally, he has committed $2 billion to the struggling chipmaker Intel, reinforcing his partnership with Trump.

Investment firms are keen to expand their data center holdings to capitalize on the surge in AI, leading several investors to acquire specialized data center companies rather than building their own from the ground up. SoftBank Group has agreed to acquire DigitalBridge, a US-based investor in data centres and telecoms infrastructure, for about $4bn, marking the latest move in Masayoshi Son’s artificial intelligence-fuelled dealmaking spree.

Son, the Japanese conglomerate’s founder and chief executive, is going all in on his bet that AI will revolutionise business and society — as well as SoftBank’s growth prospects.

Central to that effort is a mammoth investment in OpenAI, as well as SoftBank’s alliance with database group Oracle and others on a huge AI infrastructure project called Stargate, which will provide computing power for the ChatGPT maker.

DigitalBridge manages more than $100bn worth of assets, including data centres, cellular telecom towers and fibre-optic cable networks.

Son said the acquisition would “strengthen the foundation for next-generation AI data centres” as he pursues what he calls “artificial super intelligence”.

“As AI transforms industries worldwide, we need more compute, connectivity, power and scalable infrastructure,” said Son.

“The build-out of AI infrastructure represents one of the most significant investment opportunities of our generation,” said Marc Ganzi, DigitalBridge’s chief executive.

A veteran telecoms industry dealmaker, Ganzi previously founded Global Tower Partners, a US telecoms infrastructure group, which was sold for $4.8bn in 2013.

SoftBank plans to acquire DigitalBridge for $16 per share in cash, a 15 per cent premium to its closing price on Friday, the companies said. The deal gives DigitalBridge an enterprise value of roughly $4bn including debt.

DigitalBridge was founded in 1991 under the name Colony Capital by Tom Barrack, an early financial backer of US President Donald Trump.

Barrack, who now serves as the US ambassador to Turkey, in 2019 oversaw the acquisition of the data centre investor Digital Bridge for $325mn. He stepped down in 2021 as executive chair and the company changed its name to DigitalBridge as it pivoted away from traditional real estate to focus on digital infrastructure investments.

The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2026, if it receives the necessary regulatory approvals. Ganzi would continue to run DigitalBridge as a “separately managed platform”, the companies said.

Shares in SoftBank have almost doubled in value over the course of 2025 as Son’s AI dealmaking has accelerated. However, the stock has lost a third of its value in the past two months, amid concerns about a bubble in the AI sector and SoftBank’s ability to finance its huge investment in OpenAI. In early November, SoftBank sold its entire stake in AI chipmaker Nvidia for $5.8bn to fund its dealmaking.

SoftBank’s chief financial officer Yoshimitsu Goto said last month that the group would need to “divest our existing portfolios” to fund more than $30bn of anticipated investment in OpenAI.

But that has not reined in Son’s dealmaking. SoftBank in October agreed a $5.4bn deal to buy ABB’s robotics arm and has discussed expanding its investment in UK-based autonomous driving start-up Wayve, the Financial Times has reported. Son also agreed to invest $2bn in troubled Silicon Valley chipmaker Intel, in the latest demonstration of his alliance with Trump.

Large investment firms have been focused on building up their data centre portfolios to get in on the AI boom, with several investors ultimately buying up specialist data centre owners, given the difficulty of building these portfolios from scratch.

Private investment group Ares earlier this year completed its takeover of the international arm of property developer GLP Capital Partners, months after rival Blue Owl bought digital infrastructure investor IPI Partners.

The Japanese conglomerate said it is doubling down on building the data centers, connectivity, and power needed to support AI at a global scale.

"As AI transforms industries worldwide, we need more compute, connectivity, power, and scalable infrastructure," said Masayoshi Son, chairman and CEO of SoftBank Group.

The deal underscores SoftBank's push to control more of the physical infrastructure behind AI as competition for computing resources intensifies.

DigitalBridge will continue to operate as a separately managed platform following the deal, led by CEO Marc Ganzi.

The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

The acquisition also comes as SoftBank reshapes its bets on AI.

The company disclosed in November that it had sold nearly $6 billion worth of Nvidia stock. At the time, the company's CFO, Yoshimitsu Goto, said its decision to divest had "nothing to do with Nvidia itself" but was a way to reallocate its funds toward OpenAI.

Goto said it plans to make the final part of its $30 billion investment in OpenAI by the end of the year.

Return fraud can often be deceptive. A customer may seek a refund for a genuine item but instead return a less valuable product, a damaged item, or nothing at all. Retailers typically process refunds before inspecting the returned products, allowing fraudulent returns to go unnoticed and increasing overall costs.

According to data from Happy Returns and the National Retail Federation, the volume of returned goods handled by retailers could reach nearly $850 billion by 2025, accounting for nearly 16% of total retail sales. Alarmingly, around 9% of these returns are estimated to be fraudulent. Many consumers also acknowledge exploiting return policies in some capacity. Happy Returns mitigates fraud by performing in-person item verifications and employing AI-driven automated monitoring, resulting in a confirmed fraud rate that is significantly lower than the industry average.

Happy Returns operates close to 8,000 locations where customers can drop off returns without the need for boxes or shipping labels, including at stores like Ulta Beauty and Staples, as well as UPS locations. The hands-on verification process not only acts as a deterrent but also raises awareness among customers about the scrutiny their returns may face. "The physical handling of items at the Return Bar discourages fraudsters from attempting returns," noted Jim Green, director of logistics and fulfillment at Everlane.

Despite these measures, Happy Returns recognizes that fraud techniques are continuously evolving. Counterfeit products can closely imitate genuine items, making it challenging to detect discrepancies without meticulous examination.

While an individual return might appear typical, a combination of suspicious behaviors can trigger a review prior to any refund being processed.

At return drop-off facilities, employees can scan barcodes and compare returned items against expected visuals. Obvious mismatches can be rejected immediately. After collection at Happy Returns' hubs in California, Pennsylvania, and Mississippi, flagged packages undergo further inspection by human auditors, who document the items with photographs for analysis. These images are then cross-referenced with official product pictures and prior transaction data. Final decisions involve a collaboration between human analysts and the AI assessment, creating a multi-layer review process that complicates any fraudulent attempts.

Preliminary feedback from the pilot indicates that the AI's capabilities are proving effective, with less than 1% of returns classified as high-risk. Of those, only about 10% are validated as fraudulent, with an average loss prevention of slightly over $200 for each confirmed case. Happy Returns emphasizes that the system is designed to focus on high-confidence alerts, allowing the majority of customers to complete their returns promptly, although it does not cover all forms of abuse, such as returning worn items, commonly referred to as wardrobing.

Return fraud often looks harmless on the surface. A shopper requests a refund for a legitimate item. Instead of sending back the real product, they ship something cheaper, damaged or completely different. Retailers often issue refunds before anyone inspects the item. That speed allows fraud to slip through and drives up costs.

Industry data from Happy Returns and the National Retail Federation shows retailers will handle nearly $850 billion in returned goods in 2025, representing almost 16% of total retail sales. According to the same research, an estimated 9% of those returns are fraudulent. The report also finds that many shoppers admit to some form of return policy abuse. Importantly, because Happy Returns conducts in-person item verification and uses AI-powered automated flagging plus audit processes to catch mismatches, the rate of confirmed fraud in its network is much lower than the industry-wide estimate.

Why boxless returns changed the equation

Happy Returns operates nearly 8,000 in-person return drop-off locations inside stores such as Ulta Beauty and Staples, as well as at UPS locations. Shoppers can return eligible items without a box or shipping label, and refunds are often issued quickly after verification. Like any returns channel, fraud attempts can happen, but in-person drop-off, item verification, ongoing flagging and audits help keep confirmed fraud far lower than broader industry averages.

Happy Returns says its boxless, in-person model already blocks many common fraud tactics, including empty boxes, partial returns and fake tracking numbers. "If you never touch the product, you can't actually know what's being returned matches what was sold," the company says. Everlane says that physical handling alone acts as a deterrent. "Just the fact of knowing an individual will physically handle and verify the product at the Return Bar deters fraudsters from even attempting to commit fraud," said Jim Green, director of logistics and fulfillment at Everlane.

Still, Happy Returns acknowledges that fraud tactics continue to evolve. Lookalike products and knockoffs can closely resemble the real thing, making subtle differences hard to spot without close inspection.

How Return Vision uses AI to detect fraudulent returns

This holiday season, Happy Returns is piloting its new AI system with select retailers, including Everlane, Revolve and Under Armour, as return volumes spike.

The new AI tool is called Return Vision. It starts working the moment a shopper initiates a return online. The system looks for unusual patterns across return timing, frequency and location. A single return may appear normal on its own. When those signals overlap in suspicious ways, the return is flagged for review before a refund is issued.

At drop-off points, workers can scan item barcodes and see photos of what the item should look like. They can reject obvious mismatches on the spot. Once returns reach Happy Returns hubs in California, Pennsylvania and Mississippi, flagged packages are sent to human auditors. The items are opened and photographed, including images of the front, back and identifying labels.

Those photos are fed back into the AI system, which compares them against official product images and past transaction data. Human teams review the AI assessment and make the final decision. The goal is not automation alone. It is adding multiple layers of review where fraud is harder to hide.

Early results show how effective AI is at catching return fraud

While still in pilot, Happy Returns says Return Vision is showing early results. Less than 1% of returns flowing through its network are flagged as high risk. Of those flagged returns, about 10% are ultimately confirmed as fraud. The average prevented loss per confirmed case is just over $200.

Happy Returns says the system focuses on high-confidence cases, allowing most shoppers to move through returns without delay. The company notes that the tool does not address every form of abuse, such as wardrobing, when customers return worn items.
